13. Jewan Singh deod. "I am L.S.3.349 with 16 years' service
and have been at Lok Ma Chau since 3rd November last.
on 21st
July last I came off duty at 4 a.m. and afterwards was up and
about until 2.30 p.m. I did not see the 0. in C. go out at that
time. I didn't know he was going out or that I was senior officer
in the Station. I went to bed about 2.45 p.m. and very soon
About 2.30 p.m. fell asleep on my bed in the main barrack room.
I saw B.543 come in for a handkerchief. I did not see him
afterwards. I was still asleep about 5 p.m. when B.722 aroused
me.
B.722 I was not awakened either by shots or by the alarm.
made a report to me. I then realised I was in command in the
Station. I got up and put on my boots. I got my rifle and beit
with pouch. I took up my position at the barrack room door
opposite the charge room. After he roused me B.722 ran out into
the passage towards the back door. I heard no shots fired in
the passage or from that direction. I saw B.553 fire some shots
through the window towards the flag-staff. I looked through the
next window but saw nothing. The next thing I heard was shots
upstairs. I ordered the other three to go to their alarm posts
and fire if any one saw B.543. My fixed alarm post was in the
barrack room at the north window. B.722, as Station Guard, had
his post in the Charge Room, but he didn't go there. He stood
near the door of our room next the kitchen. I ordered him into
the charge Room. He did not go. He may not have heard. I did
not repeat the order. I could see into the Charge Room. and so
could B.315 who stood by the door on that side. We did not shut
that door, but kept it open 4 or 5 inches. I saw no-one enter
the Charge Room. In my opinion B.543 must have got the Lewis
Gun upstairs before the shooting started. I myself fired 25
shots from my rifle. We fired whenever we heard a shot. I never
saw anything to fire at. I can give no reason for so firing.
